How much does a mobile mechanic cost in Tooele?

What goes into a mobile mechanic quote, how labor is priced, and why the hourly rate is only part of the story.

It’s the first thing everybody asks, and fair enough. Here’s how mobile mechanic pricing works, so you can compare quotes without guessing.

What a repair bill is made of

Almost every repair bill, shop or mobile, comes down to the same pieces:

  • Labor. Usually priced by the hour. Around Tooele, shop labor rates commonly run about $100 to $150 an hour.
  • Parts. The parts themselves, often with a markup, which is normal across the industry.
  • Diagnosis. If the problem isn’t obvious, the time spent finding it.
  • Trip charge. Some mobile mechanics charge one, some build it into the price. Either way, it should be on the quote.

How labor time is figured

Most shops don’t charge for the minutes the mechanic actually spent. They use published labor guides, sometimes called book time, that say how long a job should take on your exact vehicle. A front brake job might book at an hour or two. A starter buried under the intake might book at several.

That’s why two cars can need the same part and get very different quotes. The part may cost about the same. The time to reach it doesn’t.

Is mobile more expensive?

Not usually, once you count everything. With a shop you may also pay for a tow, a ride, or a day off work. With a mobile mechanic, the mechanic does the driving. We wrote more about this in is a mobile mechanic cheaper?

Where a shop wins is on big jobs that need a lift, like transmissions or head gaskets. A good mobile mechanic will tell you when that’s the case.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask for it in writing. Labor, parts and any trip charge, listed out.
  2. Ask what’s included. Does the brake quote include rotors or just pads?
  3. Ask how they found the problem. A quote based on testing beats one based on a code.
  4. Watch for a quote that’s way lower than everyone else’s. Sometimes that’s cheap parts, sometimes it’s a guess.
